Ambur and Vaniyambadi in Tamilnadu is a major leather cluster represented by AMBURTEC/VANITEC contributing a significant share in the country’s leather export but severely handicapped by poor infrastructure, particularly waste water disposal and product development and marketing facilities. In order to maintain its primacy as the largest producer of leather goods and products, and to emerge as an international destination for leather industry, both Amburtec and Vanitec joined and formed the Ambur Economic Development Organization (AEDOL) on 23.07.2001, to take advantage of the Schemes being implemented by the Department Industrial policy &Promotion, GOI., for integrated infrastructure development programme to enable the clusters meet their aim of Zero Liquid Discharge by recycling the treated water, and all other existing environmental standards.
In 2005 we got the sanction from the DIPP for the first upgradation of ZLD system under IIUS (Industrial infrastructure Upgradation Scheme - 2003)at a total project cost of Rs. 6733.75/- lakhs of which the GoI Grant was Rs.4393.54 lakhs. The project was completed in 2010 at a total cost of Rs.9338 Lakhs with the members contribution and term loan from IL & FS.
Due to recent change in operational practice in tannery and updated modern technology, the water consumption has been reduced from 18-25 liter per kg to 8–10 liter per kg of raw material due to this, a decade old technology plant cannot adopt the change in the effluent characteristic and thus in turn created many hurdles in operating the effluent plant in terms of technically and financially. The AEDOL approached DPIIT through CSIR-CLRI with Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the upgradation of CETPs under IFLADP Scheme.
The DPRs were approved by DPIIT and appointed AEDOL as SPV for the upgradation of ZLD system for three CETPs at Amburtec-Malligaithope, and Amburtec-Thuthipet at Ambur and Vanitec Limited, Valayampet at Vaniyambadi under IFLADP scheme.
